About The Exhibition

Masks have played a central role in our lives during the pandemic. They have become a highly charged artifact in the public discourse. The rise of art as Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) has included a parallel cultural phenomena with the use of avatars that function as masks for alternative digital identities. It comes as no surprise since humanity has been using masks for time immemorial; in ritual, as a disguise, for protection and to mark social hierarchy.

Some of the most expensive NFT collectibles as well as many original works of art have functioned as a means of enacting a side of us that seeks expression – a mask for the digital masquerade. It has taken us into the realm of theater, where anything feels possible, especially with the lure of financial sovereignty that the environment offers. In the emergent world of cryptocurrency, decentralized finance, and the new world of art as an NFT, we get to try on new masks, explore different worlds and explore a different way of relating. Through the ritual of minting on the blockchain we expand ourselves.

The Mask Ephemera Exhibition is split into two themes; Ritual and Disguise and Sacred and Profane. Both were displayed inside the NFT.NYC Conference at The Edison Ballroom in Times Square; as well as a show open to the public at the Blockchain Center in New York. Ritual and Disguise will be displayed in the Pransky's Gallery in Deccentraland, and the SearchLight Gallery in Spatial.io will house Sacred and Profane; through the end of November.

A Proof of Attendance Protocol, or POAP tier system is used to incentivize art buyers. Collectors receive a Pink POAP for bidding on any artwork, a Bronze for purchasing 1 artwork, Silver for purchasing 2 artworks, Gold for purchasing 3 artworks, and Platinum for purchasing 5 artworks. The exhibition will be shown in New York through November 4th and can be seen in the metaverse through the end of the month. Then the exhibition will go on tour throughout a number of locations to raise the visibility of the global NFT movement and to expose artists to more communities and collectors.

Exhibition Partners include:
